Their objections to plans for the demolition of the building at 1 Palace Road to be replaced with a 5-storey block of flats were upheld and the plans thrown out.
Cllr Brian Palmer, the Liberal Democrat member of the committee led the attack on the scheme and achieved a unanimous result to refuse permission.
We now await news of what the developers want to do next - including the risk of an appeal.
